eVB number: the electronic proof of insurance for your vehicle

"eVB number" – that's what the insurance term stands for

Regardless of whether you register your car online or go to your local registration office for it – nothing works without an eVB number. We explain what you need the code for, how to get the eVB number and what the abbreviation stands for.

This is what the eVB number is all about

When the contract is concluded, your car insurance company transmits the most important information about your vehicle to a central database. The electronic insurance confirmation number, or eVB number for short, then serves the registration authority as proof of insurance of your car (at least liability). The registration office is connected to the database via the Federal Motor Transport Authority and can retrieve all important information using the eVB number.

In 2007, the seven-digit code replaced the coverage card, which was also known as a double card or insurance confirmation card and served as proof of motor vehicle liability insurance. The eVB number consists of a combination of capital letters and numbers.

Important: the eVB number is only valid for six months. Within the validity period, you can use the temporary car insurance number to register your vehicle and eventually to take out car insurance for the final time. The code can only be used once. Therefore, you should only apply for proof of insurance when you really need it so that the validity period is not exceeded.

In these cases, you need an eVB number

The eVB number of your car insurance is used when you...

*Your registration authority may be able to waive the eVB in the last two cases. It is best to ask for the details in good time.

For each vehicle that you register and re-register, you need an eVB number as confirmation of insurance. If you combine the new registration with a change of insurance company, you will automatically receive the eVB number from your new insurance company. Otherwise, you can request a new eVB number from your current insurance company.

The double card used in the past was particularly relevant for the manual registration and re-registration of vehicles. Nowadays, the transmission of insurance data is no longer done in paper form, but in digital form in a very uncomplicated way. Digital transmission also makes it easier to change ownership, as the data can be updated immediately.

This is how the eVB number is composed

This code consists of a combination of capital letters and numbers.
Example of an eVB number: D1TZ3B6.

You can recognise the insurance company by the first two characters of the eVB number. The rest of the letters and numbers are random combinations.

How to register your car with the eVB number

  • Be sure to have your car insurance number ready for new registration or re-registration – no matter what form it takes. If in doubt, ask your insurance provider for the eVB number by phone.
  • Since 2019, you can also register your car online. The prerequisite for this is that you have a new identity card with an eID function as well as a vehicle registration document and registration document with concealed security codes.
  • You can also hire someone to do the registration for you, for example a car dealer.

For a trip to the registration office, special exceptions apply to the license plate. Read our guide to short-term license plates before you apply for them.

This is what happens to the eVB number when you move

After moving, you can keep your license plate number – but you must re-register your vehicle at the registration office (transfer). If the change of residence takes place in another registration district, you will need a new eVB number from your insurance company. If you are selling, immobilizing or scrapping your vehicle for up to seven years, you can also report this by post or online.

Even in the event of a change of ownership, it is important for vehicle owners to apply for a new eVB number in good time to ensure that the new owner can register the vehicle without any problems.

Can I register several cars with one eVB number?

You can only use the eVB number once within the validity period to register a car. For each additional vehicle, you will need a new car insurance number. This means that the eVB number is tied to the vehicle registration of an individual car.

Do you use several vehicles and would like to know how you can benefit from special conditions for your car insurance? Second car insurance from DA Direkt offers you many advantages. Under certain conditions, the no-claims class of your first car also counts for your second vehicle. This has a positive effect on your posts. Your first vehicle does not currently have to be insured with DA Direkt. You can find out how you as a policyholder can save with your second vehicle on the product page of our second car insurance.

Good to know: If you want to sell your old vehicle and register a new car with the registration office, you must provide proof of your own car insurance. Therefore, you will also need a new eVB number from your insurer.

Can I drive to the registration office with the eVB number, but without a license plate?

No, because vehicles without registration are prohibited on the road. Anyone who nevertheless drives without a license is threatened with a fine and a point in Flensburg.

With the eVB number of your car, you can prove at the registration office that you have at least liability insurance for it. Only with this proof can your vehicle be registered. In return, you will receive your registration certificate and a license plate with a HU sticker.

Our tip

If you know all the vehicle data, you can also apply for insurance cover before your car is registered. This is particularly useful if, for example, you need comprehensive insurance for your car.

Theoretically, it is also possible to take out the policy retrospectively, because as soon as your vehicle has been registered, the stamped license plate is valid as proof of provisional coverage in motor vehicle liability insurance. However, the validity period of the provisional insurance cover is limited. So if you do not take out car insurance in a timely manner, the provisional insurance cover will lose its validity – and your car will be forcibly deregistered.

How and where do I get the eVB number for my car?

How to apply for an eVB number from your car insurance company

If you register a new vehicle with the insurance company, you will receive the car insurance number from DA Direkt immediately after signing the contract. Simply fill out the online application for your car insurance and you will receive the seven-digit eVB number directly afterwards. By the way, this also applies to seasonal license plates.

Direct insurers such as DA Direkt usually provide you with quick and uncomplicated access to the eVB number without cumbersome administrative procedures.

If you would like to re-register an existing vehicle, for example because you are moving or the owner changes, you can obtain your eVB number from the insurance company online or by telephone. Please have your insurance number ready for a call to DA Direkt on 069 7115 8500 – you will find it on your bill.

For short-term license plates, you also need an eVB number. As a policyholder, you will receive this after a telephone request. Have the vehicle registration document ready for this. Immediately after the conclusion of the contract, we will send you the code by e-mail or SMS.

Important: The eVB number is also important when transferring a vehicle. However, remember that you are only proving motor vehicle liability protection, but not comprehensive insurance. This means that in the event of an accident, only the costs of the other party involved in the accident are covered. Your own vehicle is not protected by the benefit of partial or fully comprehensive insurance.

What data is important for the eVB number and how high are the costs?

You do not need any special documents to apply for an eVB number.

You must enter the following data for a new eVB:

  • Name, address and date of birth of the policyholder
  • Type of vehicle, such as a car, motorcycle, or trailer
  • Desired license plate type, for example seasonal license plates
  • Owner data such as name, address and date of birth – if the owner is not also the policyholder

Thanks to the electronic insurance confirmation, your data is even more secure: only your registration office and your insurer can retrieve the information – this prevents misuse. In addition, errors can be avoided and processing is much faster. This is because the electronic form eliminates the need for a confirmation in paper form – which speeds up vehicle registration considerably.
