Die besten Gebrauchtwagen für Teenager unter 20.000 US-Dollar

Parents who choose a car for their teenage driver have a difficult decision to make as they have to find a balance between cost and safety. However, the latest analysis from Consumer Reports and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows that more security for the money is available in the latest list of the best used cars for teens.

The used cars cost between $5,800 and $19,900, based on Kelley Blue Book prices.

"Vehicles are becoming safer, and for the first time since pandemic-era disruptions, prices in the new and used markets have stabilized," said Jennifer Stockburger, Director of Operations at CR's Auto Test Center. "These trends have allowed us to point families to even better options this year."

CR and IIHS continue to put pressure on the auto industry to continuously improve new cars, allowing organizations to raise standards for their used car selections and guide families to increasingly safer models.

For the first time, all of the used vehicles recommended here have a good or acceptable rating in the IIHS test with low overlap, in addition to the good ratings in four other IIHS crash tests and average or higher scores for braking, handling and reliability from CR.

The standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is not included in the current lists, as the oldest vehicle recommended here is a model from 2014. This important, proven safety feature has been standard on all new vehicles since the 2012 model year and should be included in every vehicle a teenager drives.

Why safety is important for young drivers

The temptation – often born out of necessity – is great to buy a cheaper, simple model or to do without an older family car. However, since the car will transport their children, we believe that parents should choose the best and safest car that their budget allows.

Teens are among the riskiest drivers due to a combination of immaturity, inexperience, social pressure, and potential distractions. Consequently, they have accident rates that are almost four times higher than those of drivers aged 20 and over.

Choosing the right car can help teens stay safe. We understand that balancing all the factors that make a vehicle ideal for inexperienced drivers can be challenging.

Aside from teenage drivers, these picks can cater to any buyer looking for a vehicle that excels at combining safety and reliability.

How the used cars were selected

The Good Used Car Choices and Best Used Car Choices lists omit small cars and other vehicles under £2,750 because research shows that they don't provide adequate protection in multi-vehicle accidents. And large SUVs and pickups are not included because they can be difficult to handle, often have longer braking distances and pose a greater risk to other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Despite increased prices, we've left our limit at $20,000, and there are plenty of good options for less. For some families, today's high used car prices may mean that buying a new car is the right move, especially with lower loan rates. Don't worry: we have a list for that.

CR and IIHS identified more than 60 used vehicles under $20,000 that meet strict safety and reliability criteria.

These recommendations focus on "Goldilocks" models that offer the best all-around protection for inexperienced riders. Ultimately, the goal is to choose a reliable car with as much safety as you can afford. Active driver assistance systems (ADAS) are on the rise and are now available in many newer used cars. Features such as collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and blind spot warning are proven features that can help prevent collisions and are worth considering if your budget allows.

The listed starting price is the cheapest version in the range of years, provided that the vehicle is in good condition with typical mileage and is sold by a private party. Prices were provided by Kelley Blue Book, rounded to the nearest $100, and they reflect the average U.S. values as of April 19, 2024.

We present two levels of recommendations: Good Choices and Best Choices, grouped by vehicle category and by price.

Good used car selection for teenagers

To be considered a good choice, vehicles must have:

Above-average reliability for most of the years listed, based on CR's member surveys.

• Average or better scores from CR's emergency tests.

• Dry braking distances of less than 145 feet from 60 mph in CR brake tests.

• A good or acceptable rating in the IIHS front crash test on the driver's side with a small overlap. Launched in 2012, the test replicates what happens when the front left corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or power pole.

• Good ratings in four IIHS crash safety tests: Front, side, roof strength and headrests with moderate overlap.

• Four or five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (if rated).

These picks meet an even higher standard by requiring:

Standardmäßige automatische Notbremssysteme (AEB), die im ursprünglichen Fahrzeug-zu-Fahrzeug-Frontaufprallschutztest eine erweiterte oder überlegene Bewertung von IIHS erhalten. Die AEB halbiert die von der Polizei gemeldeten Front-to-Heck-Unfälle, wie IIHS-Untersuchungen gezeigt haben, und Auffahrunfälle machen fast ein Viertel aller Unfälle aus, in die Jugendliche verwickelt sind.
